Tuesday's World Events - March 29, 2005
1. If possible, print a map of Sudan. List the countries that border Sudan. Identify Darfur on the map. (for a map, go to www.worldatlas.com)
2. What was Brian Steidle doing in Sudan?
3. How does Brian Steidle prove that though the Sudanese government signed a ceasefire a year ago, it has not stopped its murderous campaign against the Darfuris? (For photos, click here.)
4. The African Union (AU) was founded to promote cooperation among the independent nations of Africa. What is the AU doing to help the Darfuris? How much authority do they have in Darfur? Should they do more? Explain your answer.
5. Describe how the Sudanese government carries out attacks against Darfuri villagers.
6. What needs to be done to stop the killing in Darfur, according to Mr. Steidle? (see para. 13)
7. How effective were the 35 AU soldiers (who were stationed in Mujaheryia to protect the civilian contractors) in preventing an attack on the town?
8. At least 300,000 Sudanese citizens have been murdered by their own government. This is ethnic cleansing (blacks being killed by arabs) Why has the United Nations refused to label this genocide? Why is the UN so slow to act? What are prominent black leaders in the U.S. doing to protest this genocide? (Do a google search to find out.) What is the American government doing to end the genocide? (Do a google search to find out.)
In your opinion, why is world outcry against this ethnic cleansing so slow in happening?
