1. Why do baseball players use steriods?
2. Why isn't Jose Canseco a credible witness?
3. Although fact checkers found several inaccuracies in Jose Canseco's book on steroid abuse, polls show that a majority of baseball fans believe Canseco. Why do you think this is so?
4. What does Mr. Dawson propose as a reason for the lack of eyewitnesses confirming steroid use in baseball? Is this a plausible reason? Explain your answer.
5. Under Major League Baseball's new steroid-testing program, a first positive test (of steroid use) would result in a penalty of 10 days, a second positive test in a 30-day ban, a third positive in a 60-day penalty, and a fourth positive test in a one-year ban -- all without pay. A player who tests positive a fifth time would be subject to discipline determined by the baseball commissioner. Are these penalties too lenient, too harsh, or exactly what should be done? Explain your answer.
6. How would you feel about a favorite athlete breaking a record if you knew he or she was using steriods? Why?
