9. Think about the following:
--In December 2005, the New York Times disclosed that President Bush had authorized the National Security Agency (NSA) to tap international telephone calls that included one party suspected of terrorist activity.
--Since that time the program's legality has been debated, especially over whether the president violated the law.
--The White House asserts that the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance program is a vital tool in our efforts to disrupt plots and prevent attacks here at home
--Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle worry that the program allows for electronic surveillance of Americans without warrants.
--The Bush administration argues that the president has the "inherent authority" derived directly from Article 2 of the Constitution to perform such surveillance in the name of national security.
--a panel assembled by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) argues that President Bush should be impeached over the spying program: "It violates the basic rules of the road of how you operate," said executive director Anthony D. Romero "No judge, at any level has signed a warrant for this."
With which side do you agree? Explain your answer.
10. Do some research to determine your representatives' views on electronic surveillance. You might have to email their offices to find out their views. Do they agree with your position? If so, send an email of support. If not, email them your concerns. (Go to the Senate website here and the House of Representatives here.)
