2. For TURKEY:
a) list the who, what, where and when of the news item
b) Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said that Turkey will do what it can to prevent Kobani falling into the hands of Islamic State. Why hasn’t the Turkish military taken action to aid the Kurds?
CHALLENGE: Read all of the “Background” as well as the CNN article linked to under “Resources.” Do you think the U.S. should try to persuade Turkey to help the Kurds? Explain your answer.
3. For CHAD:
a) list the who, what, where and when of the news item
b) How many countries are there in Africa; in how many of these countries is homosexuality a crime?
c) For what reason has the government said it is passing this law?
d) The U.S. gives financial aid to many countries around the world, including countries in Africa. President Obama had previously said he would cut off aid to Nigeria and Uganda over their criminalization of homosexuality. Do you think he should give the same ultimatum to Chad? Explain your answer.
e) Most of the Muslim majority countries have laws criminalizing homosexuality. There are many Muslim countries that don’t allow women to have the same rights as men, or in some cases violate the human rights of women. Should the U.S. also threaten to cut off aid to these countries in an attempt to protect the human rights of women? Explain your answer.
4. For PAKISTAN:

b) Name the other two countries in which Polio is also endemic.
c) In February, it was announced that India had eradicated Polio. What is blamed for the rise in Polio cases in Pakistan?
