Tuesday's World Events - August 16, 2005
1. Who is Sheikh Omar Brooks (AKA: Abu Izzadeen)? What did he tell his followers about himself? What did he instruct his followers to do? How was a London Sunday Times reporter able to gather this information? Why do you think Brooks meets secretly with his group?
To read the transcript of the article, click here. At the top left search box type in Sheikh Omar Brooks, click Go, Click Search under 'Search the Site'. Then click on "Focus: Undercover in the academy of hate"
2. Who is Abu Zair? What did he tell the BBC news recently? Think about what he said. Why does this kind of belief hurt a nation?
3. Who is Omar Bakri Mohammed? Based on his own statements, how do you think he regards the terrorists who murdered Americans on 9/11 and British citizens on 7/7? Bakri has lived in England for over 20 years. He hasn't worked for the last 18 years and tells his followers not to work either. Why? How does he get money? What is ironic about this practice?
4. How do you know the Savior Sect is recruiting Muslims to be suicide bombers? Have you heard or read a lot about leaders in the Muslim community condemning Muslims terrorists? Explain your answer.
5. In England, Prime Minister Blair is proposing new legislation to combat terrorism. What does he specifically want to do? (para. 5) Why might he have a hard time passing these proposals? (para. 18) How should Tony Blair (and politicians in the U.S.) respond to human rights groups who denounce profiling terror suspects, etc. Do you support profiling? If yes, explain your answer. If no, describe a better solution.
6. Re-read paragraphs 8 & 9. Is it important for countries to go after the ideological sources of terrorism? Explain your answer.
