1. __________________ Newly released documents show that the U.S. Marshals Service has been using cellphone surveillance technology that scans surrounding cellphones to hunt for criminal suspects.
2. __________________ The documents show the Marshals Service use cell-site simulators, which act as fake cellphone towers, pulling in the identifying information of cellphones within range as they search for a suspect’s phone. The mechanism quickly disconnects from phones it isn’t seeking. When the device does locate the suspect’s phone, the operator in the airplane can direct agents on the ground to a general area, where a similar, less-powerful device can more precisely track down the location of the cellphone.
3. __________________ Hours before President Obama landed in Cuba to meet with communist dictator Raul Castro this week, Castro’s police arrested more than 50 dissidents who were marching to demand longer prison sentences.
4. __________________ Berta Soler, one of the founding members of the Ladies in White, has been marching since 2003 and was arrested again on Sunday. She said, "For us, it's very important that we do this so Raul Castro knows that there are women here fighting for the liberty of political prisoners. And he needs to know that we are here being repressed simply for exercising our right to express ourselves and manifest in a non-violent way."
5. __________________ The U.S. Supreme Court this week declined to hear a case brought by the states of Nebraska and Oklahoma against Colorado. The states filed the lawsuit against Colorado saying that marijuana is being smuggled across their borders and federal law still prohibits the drug.
6. __________________ Colorado defended its law by noting that the Obama administration has indicated the federal government lacks the resources and inclination to enforce fully the federal marijuana ban.
7. __________________ The FBI has reportedly been using the services of the Israeli-based company in its effort to break the password on a terrorist’s locked iPhone after Apple complied with a court order that the company do so. The FBI thinks it will find a lot of information that could shed light on the terrorist attack, and reveal, among other things, places the two visited before the attack, and who they were in contact with, in the search for possible accomplices.
8. __________________ Apple argues that the court order directing the company to allow the FBI to access the phone is an overreach by the government and would undermine computer security for everyone.
9. __________________ While off duty, Tucson police officer Brandon Tatum attended a Donald Trump rally Saturday to stop the rally and shut it down.
10. __________________ Mr. Tatum came to the conclusion that the protesters were the problem. He said that after attending the rally that it was the violent protesters who were violating people’s constitutional rights to freedom of speech and assembly. He said the protesters were "the most open-minded, peaceful people I've ever seen."
