NOTE: The attempts by the Wisconsin governor to cut the state budget by reducing union power is an emotional issue for many hard-working teachers (as well as other public sector union members). This commentary is written from a different perspective. Consider the legitimacy of Mr. Beckner's assertions as you read.
1. What is the main idea of Mr. Beckner's commentary?
2. "Right-to-work" laws prohibit agreements between labor unions and employers making membership or payment of union dues or fees a condition of employment, either before or after hiring. Do you think Mr. Beckner makes a persuasive argument for right to work laws for teachers (permitting teachers to be employed as a teacher without being forced to join a union)? Explain your answer.
3. Ask at least one teacher nearing retirement (two if possible), and at least one teacher who has been teaching for less than five years (two if possible) how important the union is to them, and whether they think teachers should have a choice as to whether they join the union or not. Ask them to explain their answers.
4. Ask a parent and a grandparent the same question (#3). Do they base their support for/against the union on whether they themselves have been/are union members?
