1. What is the main point of Mr. Graham's commentary?
2. List the problems associated with requiring the use of ethanol in our gasoline, according to Mr. Graham. Think about the following:
-amount of ethanol that must be produced and used as fuel and the amount of corn needed to produce it
-amount of carbon dioxide produced by ethanol (global warming is said to be caused by carbon dioxide - those like Al Gore who believe this to be true are fighting to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced)
-the amount of American tax dollars used to subsidize ethanol production
-the amount of crop land available to grow corn
3. Why does Mr. Graham think that Americans do not agree with his assertion on this issue?
4. What solution does Mr. Graham propose?
5. What did you know about the pros/cons of government mandated use of ethanol in our fuel before reading this article? Which one fact was most surprising to you? Do you support government required use of ethanol? Explain your answer. Show a parent this commentary and ask him/her the same question.
