NOTE: The theory of global warming is that the earth's temperature is rising due to man's use of fossile fuels (gas, oil). It is believed that this is a drastic temperature change which will result in catastrophic problems in the environment. In order to prevent this man-made climate change, countries need to restrict energy use (reduce use of gas and oil).
*In the Kyoto Treaty governments agree to limit greenhouse gas emissions (reduce their use of gas and oil). They believe this will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions world wide and will prevent global warming.
*President Clinton supported the Kyoto Treaty. President Bush did not. *The U.S. and Australia are 2 countries that did not sign the Kyoto Treaty. Great Britain did sign on.
*British Prime Minister Tony Blair believes in the theory of global warming and was a great supporter of the Kyoto Treaty.
*The mainstream media treats the theory of global warming not as a theory, but as fact. For alternative information, click here.
1. What is the Kyoto Treaty? What major setback did the Kyoto Treaty receive in September?
2. What are emissions standards? (go to google and type 'define emissions standards') What is significant about China and India's exemption from the Kyoto Treaty's emissions standards?
3. Who is Tony Blair? What did Mr. Blair say (in his speech at former President Clinton's Global Initiative conference) about worldwide oil and gas use? How does this differ from what he has always believed? What alternative solution did Mr. Blair propose?
4. What clean source of energy does Mr. Aranoff present? How does he address the main problem opponents have with this alternative? According to the Chernobyl Forum, what is the largest health problem created by the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant? Why do opponents of nuclear power think the Chernobyl Forum is a valid group?
5. Prime Minister Tony Blair has been a vocal supporter of the Kyoto Treaty. Why do you think that America's top two newspapers chose to ignore Mr. Blair's speech at the Clinton Global Initiative? Name the two papers. How does their omission of Tony Blair's change of heart illustrate the importance of getting your news from more than one source?
