Primetime is an American conservative talk show and current affairs program hosted by political commentator Jesse Watters on Fox. Watch the video. It is the opening monologue of Watters’ Primetime show on Wednesday in which he addresses the Trump victory. In it, he obviously favors Trump, but he also runs clips of Democratic media figures commenting on Trump’s victory in which they said:
-It was “a sweeping victory”
-This was a shellacking for the Democrats tonight
1. The purpose of an editorial/commentary (monologue) is to explain, exhort, persuade, warn, criticize, praise. What do you think is the purpose of Watters’ monologue? Explain your answer.
2. Whether you are a progressive or conservative, Democrat, Republican, Independent…What do you think about the following assertions made by Watters? Do you agree or disagree? Explain your answers.
- “Axios reported ‘Trump is one of the most transcendent political figures of our time.'”
- “The machine lost and the Obama-Biden dynasty went down with it.”
- “The Republican party in the United States of America will never be the same.”
- “Liberals [were confused] ‘how could a dictator win the popular vote? and take the Senate and probably the House?’ The answer is simple: they lied to you.”
3. Watters says: “The American people don’t like being lied to. Trump even did better with women than Kamala did with men.” What does he say about “the so-called racist dictator”?
4. Watters asserts: “Trump defeated identity politics…Trump won the working class wherever they lived and whatever they looked like.” Do you agree with this assertion? Explain your answer.
5. Watters concludes by saying: “This [Trump] victory restores the power to the people. Make no mistake Donald Trump has a massive mandate – a common sense coalition destined to rebuild the American dream.” Do you think this is true? Explain your answer.
