NOTE to Students: Watch the videos under "Resources" before answering the questions.
1. a) How many people filled Madison Square Garden for a Trump rally on Sunday?
b) How many more were turned away?
2. a) By how much did each of Trump's Democratic opponents beat him in New York in 2016 and 2020?
b) NYC is a blue city (solidly votes Democrat). The last time a Republican presidential candidate won New York was Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984. Trump visited a Bronx bodega (small grocery store) in Harlem in April, held a rally in a park in the Bronx in May, and visited a barbershop in the Bronx this month. He say recently that he would try to win New York. Do you think he has a chance to do so? Explain your answer. Ask a parent the same question and discuss your answers.
c) CHALLENGE: Follow election results. Who won New York: Kamala Harris or Donald Trump? What were the final results?
3. Watch the Elon Musk speech at the Trump rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday (see "Resources" below the questions.
a) What was the tone of the speech? (angry, cynical, critical, solemn, optimistic, inspiring, encouraging...). Explain your answer.
b) Speaking at the New York Economic Club in September, Donald Trump said if he wins the presidency he will establish a "government efficiency commission tasked with conducting a complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government," and appoint Elon Musk to run it.
In his speech at Madison Square Garden, what did Musk say the Department of Government Efficiency will do?
4. In an interview on CNN on Thursday, former first-lady, NY Senator, US Secretary of State and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said that Donald Trump's rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday will seek to "reenact" a 1939 Neo-Nazi rally that was held at that location before WWII. Referencing Trump White House chief of staff (who was fired by Trump) John Kelly's assertion that Trump met the definition of a fascist, Clinton told CNN, "The term fits. You know, one other thing that you'll see next week Kaitlan is Trump actually reenacting the Madison Square Garden rally in 1939."
Clinton added: "Neo-Nazis, fascists, in America were lining up to essentially pledge their support for the kind of government that they were seeing in Germany. So I don't think we can ignore it. Now, it may be a leap for some people, and a lot of others may think 'I don't want to go there. I don't want to say that.' But please, open your eyes to the danger that this man [Trump] poses to our country, because I think it is clear and present for anybody paying attention," Clinton concluded.
Kamala Harris, when asked by an Associated Press reporter if she believes that Trump is a fascist, replied twice, “Yes, I do.” Later, she brought it up herself, saying Trump would, if elected again, be “a president who admires dictators and is a fascist.” Harris also called Trump “a fascist” during a CNN town hall last week.
At least, almost half of U.S. voters support Donald Trump. Do you think this is an accurate description of Donald Trump? If so, does this mean voters who support him are Neo-Nazis and/or fascists? Explain your answers.
5. How does the NBC reporter (in the video under "Resources) describe Trump supporters attending the Trump rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday?
