5. Redskins president Bruce Allen cites a respected poll to prove that Native Americans are not offended by the team name. As a Senator from Nevada, Sen. Reid said he has 22 tribal organizations in that state and that the “term Redskins is offensive to them.” NBC sportscaster Bob Costas said recently that the name Redskins is “an insult, a slur.”
a) Do an internet search to find news article on: “native americans ask Congress to change name of Washington Redskins” or some similar search. How many news article do you find? If there are not many/any articles, do you think that means Native Americans are not too concerned or offended by the team’s name? Explain your answer.
b) How many native American individuals/groups/tribes approached Senator Reid? Why do you think he doesn't actually cite the people/tribes who are offended? Explain your answer.
c) Even if no individual/group actually approached Harry Reid, is it his responsibility as a Senator from a state representing many Native Americans to work to have it changed? Explain your answer.
d) Read the “Background” below the question. What do you think of Wale’s accusation?
