Daily News Article - August 17, 2005
1. What do you learn about the residents of Neve Dekalim from the first paragraph? (Hint: What type of transportation are they using to leave the settlement?)
2. The deadline for settlers to leave their homes was midnight last night. Why is the Israeli army beginning the eviction of remaining Gaza settlers in the Neve Dekalim settlement first?
3. How many of the Gaza settlements is Israel evacuating? Define disengagement. What does Israel hope to achieve by the disingagement? Do you agree? Explain your answer.
4. If settlers voluntarily leave, the government will pay for new homes. If they refuse to leave, they could face up to $100,000 fines (possibly part of the compensation they will receive for relocation). Why do you think is it so important for some to take such a risk by refusing to leave?
5. Check out the link to the Jerusalem Post "Disengagement 2005" here. Look at the photo gallery, then scroll down: look at the disengagement map and then read the timeline.
What observations do you have about the Palestinians, the settlements and the forced evacuation of the settlements?
