Daily News Article - August 26, 2008
1. What needs to happen for The Republican Party to maintain its call for a constitutional ban on abortion and opposition to same-sex marriage?
2. How does the proposed 2008 platform compare in length to the 2004 platform?
3. In the 2008 platform, where does the Republican Party stand on illegal immigration?
4. According to the proposed 2008 platform, where does the party stand on the following issues:
a) The United Nations
b) Social Security reform
c) Judicial activism
5. The proposed platform repeats the current platform's support for a constitutional ban on abortion and notes progress made by the Supreme Court's upholding federal law against partial birth abortions and the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act, which guarantees that every infant born alive has full legal rights under federal law, regardless of his or her stage of development or whether the live birth occurred during an abortion.
In contrast, the Democrat party's plank on abortion reads as follows: "Choice - The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay, we oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right." (Partial birth abortions and the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act are not mentioned in the Democrat plank on abortion.)
With which party do you agree? Explain your answer.
6. CHALLENGE QUESTION: In the next week, Republicans will present their official 2008 platform. (Party platforms are finalized several days before the party's convention.)
Next week, read the platforms for both parties to see which one is more in line with your views on the issues. Go to the American Presidency Project website here for final platforms.
