The president often refers to President William McKinley's use of tariffs as a way of building up American businesses and economy.

During the presidency of William McKinley, he used a 50% tariff on all imports to empower America to emerge as the manufacturing center of the world. In fact, the world had never seen anything like it. American steel, American oil, American automotive.
America was so wealthy that we were able to raise $50 million without going to the bank at the start of the Spanish American war. The Spanish knew the war was over before it had even began.
In 1913 international bankers and corporation started the process of replacing tariffs with the federal income tax.
That was the beginning of stripping the American people of their power and making taxation of regular people the government‘s primary source of revenue - instead of tariffs on international corporations that had previously made America the wealthiest country in the world.
