Sheikh Abubukar Hassan Malin, a prominent cleric in the Somali capital, telling worshippers at a mosque in southern Mogadishu during Friday evening prayers (9/15/06), in reaction to Pope Benedict’s speech in which he quoted a 14th century Byzantine Emperor who said when discussing Islam: “Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”. The next day a nun working in a Somali hospital for women and children was killed – shot in the back – outside the hospital.
“Non-Muslims must … understand that there may be serious consequences if you insult Islam and the prophet. Whoever insults the message of Muhammad is going to be subject to capital punishment [execution for a crime committed].”
