“There’s a kind of cultural runaway going on right now around the birthday parties of kids.”
University of Minnesota Professor William Doherty, who helped angry parents in St. Paul, Minn. launch “Birthdays Without Pressure” to combat over-the-top kids’ parties.  Among their examples of past crass: stretch limos for the classmates of a 7-year-old, and a 6-year-old declaring his gift bag was “a rip-off.”
