Too Little of a Bad Thing
An editorial in the San Jose Mercury News advises Silicon Valley readers how to vote. Not surprisingly, the left-liberal newspaper opens by recommending a vote for Barack Obama. But then it shows some surprising economic literacy when the subject turns to a local ballot measure:
Voters may struggle most with the feel-good Measure D, which would instantly raise the minimum wage in the city to $10 an hour from the state’s $8. It will mean more pay for some but layoffs for others, and it will add to San Jose’s image as a place hostile to business. Vote no, and instead work to increase the state minimum, which is overdue.
But that last clause is bizarre, isn’t it? Don’t make San Jose hostile to business, make the whole state hostile to business!
