-Current French law makes it almost impossible to fire employees. French companies do not like to hire younger employees for this reason.
-Unemployment among the young people of France is about 23%
-In an attempt to relieve unemployment, President Chirac proposed amending employment laws that would allow firms to hire people aged under 26 for a two-year trial period before offering them a permanent job.
-Hundreds of thousands of young people protested, many violently, across France for a week, closing down stores, schools and streets.
-The government gave in to the protesters demands and vowed not to change the law.
-Nothing has been done to fix the economy – it is still sinking.
